Train hits, injures man in Encinitas

A man was injured when he was hit by an Amtrak train after 7 p.m. Friday, July 13, along the 1400 block of North Coast Highway 101 in Encinitas, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The train was heading southbound at 60-65 mph when the engineer spotted the person lying on the tracks ahead, according to a sheriff’s incident report. The engineer sounded the train’s horn and the person appeared to try to get off the track.

The train still hit the person despite attempts to break the train in time, authorities reported.

Transit Enforcement Unit deputies responded to the scene at about 7:20 p.m. after the incident, according to the incident report.

The victim, which the Sheriff’s Department stated was an unidentified man, was taken to Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla for treatment of his injuries.
