Encinitas beaches closed for 48 hours after a teenager was injured by a shark have reopened as of Monday morning, Oct. 1, the city announced.

Beaches in Encinitas from La Costa Avenue to Swami’s were closed for 48 hours after a 13-year-old boy was injured by a shark at about 6:55 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, authorities reported.

The beaches were reopened as of 7 a.m. Monday, according to an update from city officials.

The attack happened at Beacon’s Beach, 940 Neptune Ave. in Leucadia, the city stated in an announcement. Lifeguards administered first aid to the victim, who was described as a 13-year-old male skin diver participating in the opening day of lobster season. The boy was air-lifted to a local hospital for further treatment, the city reported.

There have been no official or resident reports of shark sightings since the incident, according to the city. Lifeguards, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department and Carlsbad Police Department will patrol the area during the week.

Marine biologist Chris Lowe of California State University, Long Beach received samples to identify the species of shark involved in the attack, the city reported. Lab results are pending.
