Eastbound and westbound Chesterfield Drive in Cardiff will be closed for most of January, the San Diego Association of Governments announced.

The road’s closure runs Jan. 2-23 between Coast Highway 101 and San Elijo Avenue, according to the announcement. Pedestrian and bicycle access will be continue, however. Motorists will be redirected north to D Street in Encinitas and south to Lomas Santa Fe Drive in Solana Beach.

In preparation for the closure, the Cardiff 101 Main Street group is spreading the word to residents and visitors that shops will be open in the town’s business district.

The closure is necessary for ongoing work at the rail crossing as part of the Build NCC and Coastal Rail Corridor projects, which includes the city of Encinitas’ future quiet zone through Cardiff. The zone would eliminate the need for train horns when approaching the crossing.

Several elements will be worked on during the closure, according to SANDAG:

Class I bikeway and pedestrian path;
ADA-accessible sidewalk and ramps;
New traffic signal and rail crossing equipment;
Modernized and enhanced crossing warning system;
Improved crossing signals and gates;
Additional safety signage.
