A pedestrian died in a hit-and-run in downtown Encinitas just after the turn of the year, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department reported.

The incident happened just before 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 1, when a vehicle traveling westbound on Encinitas Boulevard toward Coast Highway 101 hit the man as he walked north at the intersection, according to a Sheriff’s Department report. The vehicle continued westbound onto B Street.

The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment of major injuries and later died.

Authorities described the vehicle as a dark-colored sedan or van, possibly a Chrysler or Dodge, with damage to the front driver’s side. It’s not known whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision.
