Carlsbad CA— Who says oysters are only made for slurping in the “r” months? August 5th is National Oyster Day, and thanks to the technological savvy of modern farmers, those briny bivalves are now fully shootable in all seasons.
Just in time for National Oyster Day, Southern California’s only oyster farm has just opened its doors to the public for tours, tastings and even shucking classes. The Carlsbad Aquafarm, 4600 Carlsbad Blvd, Carlsbad, CA 92008, a historic hidden gem in San Diego’s North County is Southern California’s only shellfish farm growing Pacific oysters and Mediterranean mussel.
Just recently the Aquafarm has introduced a tour and Farm Discovery Walk, showcasing the techniques and equipment used to support the growth and harvesting of Carlsbad’s homegrown oysters, as well as examples of how the farming process protects the natural ecosystem of the lagoon. At the end of the tour is as an Oyster Shucking Class, with an opportunity to shuck your own oyster, and generous oyster tastings.
Tours are 10am, 12pm, 2pm and 4pm daily. Reservations are required. For more information visit- https://carlsbadaquafarmersmarket.com/collections/farm-tour-packages
