Oceanside CA— When Oceanside Mayor Esther Sanchez learned about National Beer Day, she hopped on the opportunity to celebrate the city’s breweries.
Sanchez recognized the entrepreneurs last week in celebration of the day.
“This is one of our really significant contributors to our local economy,” Sanchez said as she issued a proclamation honoring the breweries at the start of the City Council meeting on April 6.
Sanchez said she was inspired to make the proclamation when she recently learned about National Beer Day, which was April 7.
“In doing some research, I thought, wow, this is such a really cool thing,” she said in her comments during the meeting. “The commitment, the investment that you all have done in Oceanside, some actually by local O’siders, has just been pretty phenomenal. The entrepreneurship … the craftsmanship.”
National Beer Day marks the signing of the Cullen-Harrison Act by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt in 1933, which led to the repealing of the 18th Amendment, prohibition, with the ratification of the 21st Amendment to the U.S. Constitution.
In making the proclamation, Sanchez noted the state and region’s influence in creating today’s craft beer movement.
“The craft beer movement began in California and continues to lead the nation with creative, innovative beers, passionate brewers and beer enthusiasts,” she read from the proclamation. “Craft beer tourism in Oceanside has tapped into the local farm-to-table movement, creating a local O’side culture that is unique and popular.”
Representatives from Northern Pine Brewing and Oceanside Brewing Co., among 14 breweries listed on the proclamation, were on hand for the proclamation. In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, local entrepreneurs who survived shutdowns and restrictions are now working to rebuild their businesses.
“We’ve had some growing pains; we’ve overcome a lot,” Northern Pine Brewing’s Bobby Parsons said at the meeting. “The city’s always been behind our back.”
“We love doing business here and we look forward to the next 10 years,” an Oceanside Brewing Co. representative said.
A lot of the networking and support for the city’s businesses, especially downtown along Coast Highway, comes through the MainStreet Oceanside organization.
“It’s a great collaboration effort with the breweries that we have in downtown,” Gumaro Escarcega, MainStreet’s chief operating officer, said at the meeting.
The 14 city breweries listed on the proclamation were:

Bagby Beer Co.;
Belching Beaver Co.;
Black Plague Brewing;
Booze Brothers Brewing Co.;
Breakwater Brewing Co.;
Craft Coast Beer & Tacos;
Kilowatt Brewing;
Legacy Brewing Co.;
Northern Pine Brewing;
Oceanside Brewing Co.;
South O Brewing Co.;
Stone Brewing;
Tap That;
Tipping Pint Brewery.
