Oceanside CA- El Camino used power football and a stingy defense to defeat Granite Hills 21-12 in the Wildcats season opener.
The Granite Hills Eagles hit El Camino hard, early in the first quarter with a 77 yard half-back option pass for a touchdown. The Wildcats recovered quickly blocking the PAT. The El Camino offense was unable to move the ball but a good punt had the Eagles pinned inside the 3 yard line. The Eagles broke out quickly with two long pass plays putting Granite Hills in scoring position. A key interception in the end zone by El Camino’s Cj Simmons killed the Eagles drive. The Wildcats defense kept Granite Hills from scoring again in the first half.
El Camino got on the board with 2:01 left in the third quarter on a one yard pass from Sergio Lopez to Anthony Taele and took the lead with the point after, 7-6. After the two teams swapped turnovers, El Camino full-back, Daniel Aguillara scored the first of his two touchdowns at the 7:54 mark of the fourth quarter giving the Wildcats a 14-6 lead. Granite Hills, Blake Dehaven ran the ensuing kick-off back 99 yards for a touchdown bringing the Eagles within two 14-12 . The Eagles two point conversion attempt failed. El Camino used more power running as Daniel Aguillara got his second touchdown of the night with 5:55 left in the game. The point after was good. The Eagles had one more chance to get back in the game when the snap sailed over El Camino punter Tyler Bassinger’s head. Bassinger recovered the ball and the Eagles took over on the Wildcats one yard line. The El Camino defense stifled the Eagles and a field goal attempt on 4th down went wide left.

Oceanside traveled to Mesa College to take on the St Augustine for their season opener. The No. 1 ranked Pirates used two quarterbacks, Matt Romero and Dakota Miller in alternating series to beat the Saints 47-28.
