Oceanside CA- Six turnovers ended Oceanside’s bid to upset the number two ranked team in the state and 11th in the country, Serra , with a final score 50-39. Oceanside held the lead into the fourth quarter 39-36 but poorly thrown balls by alternating Pirate QB’s Matt Romero and Dakota Miller kept the Cavaliers in the game.
A 54-yard touchdown reception from Caviler Jalen Greene put Serra ahead for keeps with 3:21 left in the game. Poor special teams play by the Pirates, on the ensuing kick-off, sealed the deal for Serra when John Houston recovered the kick on Oceanside’s 30 yard line that set up the final score of the night, a 7 yard touchdown run by Adoree Jackson.
The Pirates had plenty of upside during the game including a 52 yard field goal by Jackson Koonce and a brilliant touchdown reception by Mikah Holder that left Serra defenders strewn about the field. The Pirates held their own but looked tired down the stretch against the bigger and very talented Cavalier team.
Next up for the Pirates is a home game against Chaparral on September 13th @ 7:00pm.
