Oceanside CA- Oceanside shuts-out Torrey Pines, 35-0 as the Pirates roll through the first round of CIF San Diego Section-Open Division play. Pirate Head Coach, John Carroll relinquished the head coaching duties to assistant coach Tom Coleman due to health reasons but the Oceanside team didn’t miss a beat. Winning their sixth straight game, the Pirates have outscored opponents 223- 27 since their road loss to Mission Hills on September 27.

Torrey Pines was able to move the ball, early, against the Pirates but the Oceanside defense started to get in sync forcing the Eagles to punt from the Pirate 31 yard line. The kick was a fake and the pass from Eagle punter, Jack Bailey fell incomplete, the Pirates took over on downs. Oceanside then drove 69 yards on 7 plays capped by a spinning 3 yard touchdown run by Malcolm Lau Young, 7-0 Pirates with 4:45 left in the first quarter. On the next possession, the Eagles were again able to start driving the ball when the Pirate defense forced a fumble. Jace Whittaker scooped up the ball and ran 50 yards for the touchdown leaving the Torrey Pines team standing around not knowing what just happened. With 9.31 seconds left in the first half, the Pirates forced Torrey Pines to punt. The kick landed in a crowd of players but Chase Wittaker saw an opening, picked the ball up on the bounce and ran it in from 57 yards making the score 21-0 at the half.

The second half started the way the first half ended for Oceanside. The Pirates received the kick-off to start the half, Thai Cottrell caught the ball at the 2 and proceeded to take it 98 yards for the score. It seems no Oceanside game is complete without a Matt Romero to Mikah Holder touchdown. The two combined for a 60 yard strike late in the third quarter ending scoring for the night.
Big defensive plays from Tommy Woo and Carlsbad transfer, Rafael Sangines led to 10 sacks of Torrey Pines QB Pete Mitchell and the Eagle offense was unable to sustain any kind of threat.
Up next for the Pirates (9-2) is Eastlake High School (10-1) in Chula Vista. Eastlake , the number 2 seed in the Open Bracket and last years Division I champions, beat Poway 41-7 setting up the semi-final match-up.
