Oceanside CA– Oceanside High School took on Mission Viejo Friday night in game two of the Honor Bowl at Simcox Field and with a strong first half of football, the Pirates beat the Diablos, 24-7.
Oceanside got on the board first in this hard hitting contest with a well balanced drive that included a 33 yard Matt Romero to John Grumbling strike down the left side. Grumbling was hit hard by Diablos Free Safety Julian Owens but held on to the ball and was down at the Mission Viejo 19 yard-line. The Pirates drive stalled and the team lined up for a field goal. With Matt Romero holding for the kick, he took the snap, got up, rolled to his left and hit Isaia PaoPao for a 22 yard touchdown on the fake field goal that was run to perfection. The PAT was good and it was 0-7 with 5:58 remaining in the first quarter.
Josh Bernard added another score showing his strength and speed when he broke through the left side of the line and sprinted 55 yard for a touchdown. PAT good 0-14, Pirates.
A little bit of luck and heads up play by Johnny Arzola led to the Pirates third score of the half. Romero rolled to his right and threw down field to Arzola. The ball was a bit under thrown and Mission Viejo cornerback, Abrae Booker-Currin tipped the ball in the air at the five yard line. Arzola kept his eye on the ball, snagged it and back-peddled into the end zone for the score. PAT good, 0-21 with 8:00 left in the half and that was the score at half-time.
Mission Viejo (0-2) made it interesting when Peyton Marshall scored from three yards out with under four minutes to play in the third quarter. Neither team was able muster much offense the rest of the game with strong defensive efforts by both clubs dominating play. Oceanside (2-0) added a field goal in the fourth quarter resulting in the 7-24 final score.
Up next for the Pirates is a road trip to Temecula for a game against Chaparral (1-1). The Pumas lost on the road to Tesero 19-24
