San Marcos CA— The Coach Dave Rodriguez era began Friday night for the Oceanside Pirates and a 21 point 4th quarter gave the coach his first win at the helm in his debut.
It looked very much like what you would expect a first game of the season to look like for three quarters, Friday night, with both teams starting slow.
Oceanside took a 7-3 lead to the locker room at halftime after capitalizing on a San Marcos turnover at mid-field.
Daiquan Cook caught a pass at the one yard-line from Oceanside quarterback, Max Shuffer and strolled into the end-zone for the first touchdown of the new era.
Oceanside had two other scoring opportunities in the first half. A 25-yard field-goal attempt by Jake Gerardi was blocked in the first quarter and another 27-yard kick fell short in the 2nd quarter.
The San Marcos Knights came out of the locker-room, after halftime, fired up and San Marcos QB, Bryson Bolin drove the team 80 yards to take a 10-7 lead.
The Pirates shook off the cobwebs in the fourth quarter as Max Shuffer threw for three touchdowns. Two 35-yard strikes to Taj Apodaca and a 14-yard pass to Jake Gerardi after two delay of game penalties moved the Pirates back from the two-yard line.
Coach Rodriguez told the team after the game “I’m honored to be your coach. I’m honored to have the opportunity to comeback and be an Oceanside Pirate.” Rodriguez coached in Oceanside from 1995 through 2003, with John Carroll, who was on the sidelines for the game.
