Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Pirates defense was key to Friday nights 30-8 win over the visiting San Pasqual Golden Eagles.
San Pasqual won the field position game early in the contest leading to the Golden Eagles only touchdown of the night. A punt pinned Oceanside deep at their own 1 yard-line. Oceanside Quarterback Robby Beardsley lost the ball in the end-zone and it was recovered by San Pasqual for the touchdown. The two point conversion was good giving San Pasqual the early 8-0 lead.
Neither team could put together any offensive momentum with Oceanside turning the ball over three times in the first quarter.
In the second quarter, the Oceanside defense had turned the field position contest back in their favor, stopping San Pasqual on 4th and 5 and giving the offense a short field to work with. The Pirates then marched 54 yards in 10 plays scoring on a Beardsley to Azizi Hearn 10 yard pass. PAT good and it was 8-7.
The Pirates forced San Pasqual to punt on their next possession. A bad snap had Golden Eagle punter, Cole Hardan, scrambling with the ball, out of his own end-zone. He was stopped short of the first down and the Pirates took over deep in San Pasqual territory.
A holding penalty negated a nice touchdown run by Niko Mageo but the Pirates did capitalized with a Beardsley to Ronan Ivanovich 26 yard touchdown pass and the Pirates went into the locker room with a 8-14 lead.
Long snapping continued to be a problem for San Pasqual when another bad snap led to a safety. The ball sailed over Hardan’s head and out of the back of the end-zone for a 8-16 lead for the Pirates.
The Oceanside defense was in the Golden Eagle backfield all night and the pressure led to the next Oceanside score. Jamie Harris made the strip sack on the San Pasqual QB and Jake Gerardi scooped up the loose ball running 64 yards for the score. PAT good, 8-23 with 6:28 remaining in the game.
Oceanside added one more touchdown after a San Pasqual fumble for the final score of the game.
