San Clemente CA— A special screening of Bud Browne’s classic 1964 color film, Locked In! and the first animated surfing cartoon will be shown at Surfing Heritage and Culture Center (SHACC) on Saturday, March 19th. In addition, authors John Engle and Anna Trent Moore, Browne’s longtime friend and caretaker, will be signing copies of their new books: Engle’s Surfing in the Movies, A Critical History and Moore’s Laughing at Water. Doors open at 5pm. Tickets are available online at www.surfingheritage.org $5 for SHACC members, $10 for non-members. Seating is limited.
Locked In! was recognized by SURFER Magazine as one of the top three surf movies ever made. This will be the first West Coast screening of this classic film in over four decades. Bud Browne’s waterman skills allowed him to revolutionize surf cinematography by shooting from the impact zone in the water, capturing close-up images of the powerful Hawaiian surf. John Engle is bringing a rare copy of the first animated surfing cartoon, Bobby Bumps, Surf Rider, from Bray Productions, 1917 (courtesy of Tommy Stathes of the Bray Animation Project and Cartoons on Film).
According to Barry Haun, SHACC’s Curator and Creative Director, “It’s going to be a great night for fans of classic surf films, several of the surfers featured in Locked In! are expected to be in attendance, including Linda Benson, Joyce Hoffman, John Peck, LJ Richards, and Ron Sizemore.”
SHACC’s no-host bar will be serving Longboard Vineyards wines, Left Coast Brewing Co. beers, Hawaiian Springs water, and natural energy drinks from Kona Red. For more information or tickets go to: www.surfingheritage.org or call (949) 388-0313 ext: 0
