Loving husband, devoted father and grandfather, Brooks passed away unexpectedly January 8, 2018, at the age of 68.
Born in Oceanside, N.Y. to Thomas F. Jr. and Elizabeth A. Mackin, Brooks graduated from Freeport High School and attended Nassau Community College. A passionate east coast surfer craving the “Endless Summer,” Brooks moved to Southern California in the 1970’s where he met his wife, Shari, and started his beloved family in 1982 in Oceanside.

A highly respected craftsman, Brooks built and installed news sets and exhibits throughout the states; he carried a California C-6 Contractor’s license for more than 30 years. Brooks, fondly referred to as a Gentle Giant, was actively involved in youth sports, coaching both basketball and baseball teams. His love for the blues took him to the stage where he blew the harp and sang soulful vocals with several local bands. An institution in South O, Brooks and his dog were regulars at Marshall Street Park where he caught up with friends and neighbors.
Simply put, Brooks Mackin was a family man. He is survived by his loving wife Shari, and beloved sons Austin and Tyler. Recent loving additions to his family include cherished daughter-in-law Ashley and delight-of-his-life, one-year-old grandson, Owen. Brooks also leaves his younger sister, Kim Mackin, of Massachusetts.
A paddle out is scheduled for Saturday, January 27th at 2:00 p.m. sharp at Buccaneer Beach followed by a Celebration of His Life at the Moose Lodge, 2017 S. Coast Hwy., Oceanside.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Museum of Making Music, 5790 Armada Drive, Carlsbad, CA; https://www.museumofmakingmusic.org/donate
