Oceanside CA— Boys and Girls Clubs of Oceanside youth from 7 different after-school sites across Oceanside and Vista participate in a Jr. Chargers Training Camp. On November 19th, two camps were held for 200 youth ages 7-14, to participate in NFL-style drills and relays. This camp was a fun, recreational way for youth to get outside and be active while spreading the importance of playing 60 minutes a day. The ‘Play 60’ movement is the recommended amount of daily physical activity for youth to reverse the trend of childhood obesity.
In partnership with Star/Pal, San Diego’s Police Athletic League, six Oceanside Police Officers volunteered for the day. This allowed Oceanside youth to engage with police officers in a positive environment. In addition, the Oceanside Police Department brought their mobile command unit for youth to tour.
This event aligns with the Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s Sports, Fitness and Recreation programming to help develop fitness, a positive use of leisure time, reduction of stress, appreciation for the environment and social and interpersonal skills. The Jr. Charger’s Training camp also supports, Wellness Warriors the Club’s healthy initiative. Great Futures Start at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside and these targeted programs help encourage healthy lifestyles among local youth.
