Oceanside CA— After being closed 100 days, for a complete remodel, the original Oceanside McDonald’s celebrated its reopening on Saturday, November 1, 2014. A large crowd attended the celebration which featured a ribbon cutting ceremony, prizes including bicycles, a flat screen television and more plus a visit from Ronald McDonald.
The original restaurant, located 137 Canyon Drive, opened in 1969 and was one of three in San Diego County. “When I was with the police department, this place kept me going,” said Oceanside Mayor Jim Wood, who was on hand for the opening. “It was the only place, at the time, where you could get a quick bite to eat.”
The Canyon Drive restaurant is one of eight McDonald’s located in Oceanside. There are 108 in San Diego County. “I’ve been coming here since 1969- 1970 when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton and now it is my last stop after council meetings every Wednesday.” said Oceanside City Council-member, Jack Feller during the reopening event.
Art Sandoval purchased the franchise from another family member in the spring of 2014. “In June, I decided to close the restaurant for 100 days and do what they call a four wall rebuild.” Sandavol continued “Everything is new from the plumbing to the electrical.” The trademark sign, in front of the building, is the original sign from 1969. “We took it down and had it completely refurbished and it lights up beautifully at night.” added Sandoval.
The updated Oceanside restaurant now includes improved landscaping and dual drive thru lanes that are open 24-hours. The all new interior features updated restrooms, digital menu boards, modernized color schemes and interactive kids games.
The restaurant drive-thru will be open 24 hours and for a limited time, will be offering a $1 Big Mac between midnight and 4 a.m.
