Countywide Organization Recaps Momentous Year For Bicycle Riders

San Diego Bike Coalition announces top 2014 regional bicycle achievements

San Diego County CA—As 2014 draws to a close, the San Diego County Bike Coalition reflects on a year of regional two-wheeled triumphs that have made San Diego a safer place for all people on bicycles.
Top bicycle achievements for the San Diego region include:

  • The Three-Feet for Safety Act became law, raising awareness about safely sharing roads with people on bicycles.
  • Two CicloSDias events brought thousands out to roll through miles of car-free streets in Pacific Beach and Hillcrest/Bankers Hill.
  • The National Bicycle Tourism Conference came to San Diego for the first time in its 25-year history.
  • The Protected Bikeways Act passed, encouraging cities to use safer, modern infrastructure for bikeway design.
  • The City of San Diego approved its first-ever Bike Advisory Committee, naming the San Diego Bike Coalition’s Andy Hanshaw as Committee Chair.
  • A record number of people participated in Bike Month and Bike to Work Day, despite its postponement.
  • City of San Diego committed to DECO Bike Share, installing 1,800 bikes and 180 bike stations citywide and launching in early 2015.
  • The City of Coronado joined Oceanside, Chula Vista and only 57 other cities nationwide with a Silver Bicycle-Friendly Community designation from the League of American Bicyclists.
  • New Belgium Brewing’s annual Tour de Fat raised more than $45,000 for local bicycle nonprofits in San Diego.

“With the implementation of two laws to raise awareness, bike sharing, CicloSDias events and so much more, I am happy to say that San Diego is becoming a bicycle-friendly region,” says Bike Coalition Executive Director Andy Hanshaw. “2015 has the potential to be one of the best years for bicycling yet, but 2014 won’t be easy to beat.”
