Oceanside CA— At its December 10 meeting, the MiraCosta Community College District Board of Trustees swore in a new member, Rick Cassar, three re-elected trustees—David Broad, Bill Fischer, Jeanne Shannon–and selected officers for 2015.
Newly elected trustee Rick Cassar fills the slot recently vacated by Ron Ruud, who chose not to seek re-election. Cassar represents Trustee Area 2, the area surrounding the San Elijo Campus in Cardiff and Rancho Santa Fe.

A 19-year Cardiff resident, Cassar is a graduate of the University of Michigan and San Diego State University, and holds a master’s degree in counseling education. Cassar has been a counselor and professor of psychology at San Diego Miramar and San Diego City colleges for nearly 30 years. He and his wife, Kristine, have a blended family of three children–their son attends preschool and his stepchildren attend MiraCosta and San Diego Mesa community colleges.
Also at its December 10 meeting, the Board of Trustees elected Jeanne Shannon, CPA, as its board president and David Broad as vice president.
Shannon, a Carmel Valley resident, was elected to the MiraCosta College board in November 2010 and represents Area 1, the most southern part of the district. Since 1991, Shannon has managed her own accounting and tax practice. She has also used her education background to teach accounting and tax classes at the University of San Diego and the University of Phoenix. She is active in the San Diego Chapter of the California Society of Certified Public Accountants.

Broad, a resident of Oceanside, represents Area 6, northwest Oceanside. Broad retired as general manager of Genentech’s Oceanside Campus in 2008. He has been involved with MiraCosta College since 2001, initially helping set up a biotech-certificate program to train workers for the IDEC/Genentech facility, and then with the MiraCosta College Foundation, with which he remains active in raising money to help students meet their educational goals.
