Oceanside CA— The Umoja Community will host several events and activities throughout the month February in a celebration of Black History Month. All events will be held on MiraCosta’s Oceanside Campus at 1 Barnard Drive, and are free except as noted.
Ebony and Jet Magazine Display

The exhibit and lecture will highlight some of the minor stories published in Jet and Ebony magazines (1959-1979) that may not have made it into the history books. Who are the unsung heroes who contributed to the evolution from segregation to integration and the growth of the black community in the United States?
Who Killed Michael Brown? – An examination of the social factors that contributed to his death

Was Michael Brown killed solely because of his own actions or are there other important factors that may have contributed to his death? This workshop is designed to delve deep into relevant social factors that may have significantly contributed to the shooting death of Michael Brown by former officer Darren Wilson.

This event is a student-run conference open to everyone and is centered on issues relevant to the black community. This year’s theme is “The B.L.A.C.K. Print”, which stands for Building Leaders Against Controlled Knowledge. Free breakfast, lunch and t-shirts while supplies last.
How Does Privilege Work? An analysis of the structure that promotes privilege in society

Hip-Hop and the Academy

When did hip hop become something you could study in college? How does an analysis of hip hop’s ideologies, theories and practices enrich the academy? What would it look like to construct a teaching strategy that embraces the knowledge, beliefs and values of hip hop? Come to this workshop and find out!

This culminating event will feature a silent auction and a jazz, gospel and R & B concert. Performers will include David Dredden & Undefeated, TJ Wilkins (vocalist) and MiraCosta College’s Frequency Vocal Jazz Ensemble directed by Matt Falker. Sociology instructor, Anthony Blacksher, will serve as master of ceremonies.
The silent auction will start at 4 p.m. and the concert will start at 5 p.m.
