“Although the Feral Cat Coalition provides spay/neuter services for free, the average cost to spay or neuter a cat is about $25,” said Sheri Randle, Feral Cat Coalition board member. “Through the Stray Soirée, we hope to have fun, educate the community about feral cats and raise much needed funds to continue our services to help end the overpopulation of stray and abandoned cats.”
Feral cats are the “wild” offspring of domestic cats and are primarily the result of pet owners’ abandonment or failure to spay and neuter their pets. Feral cat colonies can be found behind shopping centers or businesses, in alleys, parks and rural areas. They are elusive and do not trust humans. Nearly all homeless cats relinquished to county shelters are euthanized. The alternative to humane euthanasia for strays is often death from starvation, disease or abuse.
The Feral Cat Coalition is a San Diego County nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing the suffering and overpopulation of stray and abandoned cats through humane Trap-Spay/Neuter-Return. Since 1992, the Feral Cat Coalition has spayed and neutered more than 35,000 feral cats, and in 2012, opened its own spay/neuter clinic, Feral & Friends, where more than 4,500 cats have been sterilized to date.
“I hope that the people will join us for our Stray Soirée and help us raise the funds to continue our services to help feral cats and end cat overpopulation,” added Randle.
