Oceanside CA— Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside announces focus on healthy habits through their Wellness Warrior program. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside is working with the California Department of Education to provide a healthy snack and supper to Club members each day at their Townsite Clubhouse. The food program began in December and is free of charge to Club members. With 98% of Club members eligible for the free/reduced lunch program, there is a tremendous need for healthy, nutritious food in the afternoon and evening hours. This program ensures that approximately 100 youth each day receive the nutrition required for their growth and development. With healthy supper items like pasta with meat sauce and potato quesadillas, Club members are enjoying mealtime and going home happy and well fed.
The Wellness Warrior Program, which began in 2014, is a Club-wide, comprehensive program that incorporates nutrition, healthy cooking, fitness, gardening, stress reduction and overall wellness. It is unique in its holistic approach to healthy lifestyles. The program is designed to educate Club youth about nutrition, teach healthy eating habits, provide healthy cooking classes and to incorporate daily fitness activities.
The program incorporates classroom curriculum, outdoor fitness activities and challenges, guest speakers on health and wellness topics and health related field trips. Support for the program has come through grants from the California Department of Education, Tri-City Healthcare District and Fresh Creative Foods.
