Del Mar CA— The San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons-Vons, offers many one-day contests; some for cooks, some for crafters, others for artists and many others for people who just like to have fun. Some contests allow for free admission to the Fair! Visit www.sdfair/contests for more information, contest rules and how to pre-register.
Green thumbs, show your skills by participating in the Homegrown Produce contest. The Pre-registration form is due June 5. Bring your best fruits and/or vegetables (one per class) on any of these Saturdays; June 13, 20 or 27, and compete against others who have grown “the best in San Diego.” Enter your squash, peppers, corn, beans and root vegetables to citrus, avocados, melons, grapes, berries and more. The best will win cash, ribbons and bragging rights!
For bee lovers and Homegrown Honey harvesters 12 years and older, June 13 is your day. Bring a completed entry form and a 5 oz. jar of honey that you harvested. Entries will be judged on water content, color, taste and sweetness, and they will be featured in an educational honey display.
Zucchini Races. This creative contest is for kids between the ages of 5 – 12. The pre-registration deadline is May 29. Exhibitors MUST bring their own entries (zucchini may be purchased or home-grown) to the judging table. That means that the kids, not the parents, enter their zucchini. Ribbons will be awarded to all racers in each heat, as well as for largest, smallest, best decorated, most unusual, and best Fair Theme (“A Fair to Remember”). All zucchini entries must have their wheels attached — a zucchini cannot be a “passenger” in a car; it must the “the car!” It must be self-propelled, which means no motors, no additional assistance and it may be decorated or dressed. Each entry (zucchini and wheels) will be weighed upon entry and paired with comparable weighted entries.
Painters 18 years and older can participate in the Plein Air Contest on Thursday, June 25. Entry forms must be submitted at www.sdfair/entry by 11:59 p.m. (Pacific Time) Saturday, June 20. A processing fee of $15 includes Fair entry and parking on June 25.
Small Art Contest on Thursday, July 2, is for small artworks in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing, collage, mixed media or sculpture. The piece must be no larger than 7” x 7” of painted area (excluding frame) (2-D), or 7”x 7”x 7” in any direction (3-D). The artwork may be framed. First place is $50 and second through fourth place will receive a ribbon, certificate and other prizes.
Photo Shootout contest: Saturdays, June 13 and 20 (digital cameras), and 27 (cell phone photos). Pre-registration online at http://www.sdfair.com/contests and then click on “other one day contests.” Deadlines are May 29, June 5, and June 19, respectively, for the dates listed above. You may enter this competition by online registration only. Participants will have two hours to capture a photo with a special theme. Afterwards, all participants will vote for their favorite photos, with prizes awarded to the top three photos.
