Real Options for Adults with Disabilities
Oceanside CA— The Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside was thrilled to have the R.O.A.D.’s program be the recipient of the Elisabeth Wilson Endowment, administered through the Legacy Endowment Community Foundation. This unique program provides opportunities and activities for adults with disabilities to reach their fullest potential.
The R.O.A.D.’s Program has become a strong presence in Northern San Diego County, known for providing opportunities for adults that have an intellectual or developmental disability, to learn life skills through real life experiences. The goal is to enhance the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities by creating an environment to learn, grow and be involved within our community. Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. members participate in educational, social and life skill activities. Everything from financial literacy, to classes on self-defense, yoga, zumba, volunteering at the local Senior Center, gardening and so much more! Members take group field trips to the San Diego Zoo, Old Town Temecula, and the Oceanside Harbor. Local businesses, such as Swami’s, have welcomed our R.O.A.D’s members as they practice such skills as communicating, ordering from a specialized menu, paying and verifying change.
According to Jodi Diamond, CEO of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside “Thanks to the $2,500 grant from the Legacy Endowment Community Foundation and the visionary compassion of Elisabeth Wilson we were able to enhance the quality of life for persons with developmental disabilities. Funds were used to purchase costumes and a high-tech wireless microphone system for our R.O.A.D.’s drama and performance activities. We are so excited for the upcoming performance of Junglebook, on August 21st.”
Austin, R.O.A.D’s member of 5 years explains, “Before I started R.O.A.D.’s I was at home watching too much TV, I had nothing to do. So I joined R.O.A.D’s! My favorite part is going on field trips and dancing every Tuesday and Thursday in Zumba!”
Please join the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside, community members, family and staff for the R.O.A.D’s upcoming musical: “The Jungle Book” on Friday, August 21st at 11:00AM at the Elks Lodge on 444 Country Club Lane, Oceanside, CA 92054. Through this performance you will smile, laugh and have your hearts filled with joy as you experience this incredible group of individuals and all they continue to achieve. The R.O.A.D’s program is essential to our community to inspire, develop, and enrich individuals with disabilities to reach their fullest potential as confident, productive, responsible, caring members of society. The opportunity the Club provides through this program is pivotal in positively impacting this community.
