Oceanside CA— The Oceanside Police Department will be hosting a Senior Volunteer Patrol Program Academy in September 2015. The academy is one week long and trains volunteers in all aspects of their position as SVPP volunteers.
Senior volunteers assist uniformed police officers in a variety of ways. SVPP members assist with the impounding of vehicles, traffic control, assist at DUI checkpoints, conduct vacation checks, and perform YANA checks. The YANA program (You Are Not Alone) is a valuable service performed by the members of SVPP in which they monitor the welfare of elderly persons who are enrolled in the program.
The opportunities for serving in the community as an SVPP member are nearly endless and are rewarding. Earlier this year two of the SVPP members saved a YANA member’s life when they discovered she had fallen and was unable to get up. More recently two of the SVPP members assisted an elderly fall victim while they were on their rounds. Their timely intervention and summoning of rescue personnel kept this person from sustaining a more severe injury.
Applicants must be 50 years of age, possess a valid California Driver’s License, and pass a background check. Volunteers drive vehicles marked as “volunteer” and frequently do a bit of walking or standing.
Interested persons are encouraged to apply with the City Oceanside. Please contact Leo Bates at (760) 435-4763.
