Oceanside CA— The Friends of the Oceanside Public Library brought back their popular fundraiser, the Trivia Bee, on Sunday July 19, 2015.
Sixteen teams were entered in the competition which took place at the Veterans Association of North County. The team from TERI Inc., the TERI Trivia Titans consisting of Clarence Taylor, Rob DeZania and Allan Norton took the top spot over the Crazy Cat Ladies +1.
The event began with all the teams, with names such as “The Bee Spectacled Librarians”, “Wait, this isn’t an Elvis Convention” and the “Quizards of Oz” competing in the qualifying round.
The teams, consisting of three members, had to answer 10 multiple choice questions for seeding in the lightning round.
The lighting round was competitive but good-natured as the teams went head to head. The first team to get three points advanced in the competition bracket. The rules began evolving as the competition unfolded. “It’s been a while since we did this” said the moderator for the Bee, Ron Owens from the Oceanside Fire Department. The multiple-choice format was scrubbed and the event moved on to the championship round.
During the intermission, it was the audiences turn to get involved as Emcee for the event, Ken Harrison, with the San Diego Reader, asked questions about Oceanside’s history. Oceanside City Council member Jack Feller shined taking home three prizes for answering the questions; Q: When was Oceanside founded and how was the town name spelled originally? A: 1883, Ocean-Side
Q: What was the original name of Oceanside Boulevard? A: Short Street. Q: What John Wayne movie about World War II was filmed, in part, aboard Camp Pendleton. A: The Sands of Iwo Jima.
