The San Diego County Fair dates back to the 1880s; the Fairgrounds to the 1930s. According to Don Diego Executive Director Chana Mannen, proceeds from the Legacy Brick program enable the Foundation to continue providing generous college scholarships to outstanding students. She notes, “In 2015, we awarded $42,500 to 14 remarkable recipients attending prestigious colleges around the country. We also use the funds to bring busloads of low-income elementary students to the Fair’s PlantGrowEat program to learn about agriculture and nutrition in a hands-on way.”
The Don Diego Scholarship Foundation was named for Don Diego, AKA Tom Hernandez, who served as the Fair’s welcoming goodwill ambassador from 1947-1984. The Foundation has awarded more than $682,500 in college scholarships and grants for agricultural education since its inception in 1986.
