Carlsbad CA— The Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies has awarded national accreditation to the City of Carlsbad’s Parks & Recreation Department, making Carlsbad only the fourth agency in California to hold this distinction.
“This recognition is not just about our department, it’s about the commitment of our city leaders, volunteers and community members,” said Parks & Recreation Department Director Chris Hazeltine. “We truly work as a team to ensure our community has access to a healthy outdoor lifestyle, lifelong learning and personal enrichment.”
The year long approval process included onsite inspections and an extensive peer review. The results were announced September 14th during a hearing before the National Recreation and Parks Association annual congress. Only 136 agencies nationwide have earned accreditation.
The accreditation process requires extensive training, detailed documentation of policies and procedures, and enhanced teamwork in the delivery of parks and recreation services.
With nearly 50 miles of trails, 27 parks, and recreation programs and events for all ages, the Parks & Recreation Department is focused on providing safe places to gather, lifelong learning opportunities, special events and programs that strengthen families and build a strong sense of community, health and fitness opportunities, and the preservation of open space.
With the accreditation, the city must submit an annual update that proves ongoing compliance with accreditation standards, and re-accredit every five years.
The Parks & Recreation Department is currently making a number of improvements, based on a recent assessment of the community’s needs. Upcoming projects include a new outdoor amphitheater, a third city dog park, a multi-use arena field, a new community garden and a new community center. The department is also exploring the feasibility of a new multi-use, multi-generational community recreation center at Poinsettia Park and an outdoor adventure park.
Additionally, the department is working to improve beach access to enhance the overall visitor experience.
“This is really all about the community,” said Hazeltine. “We are committed to not only meeting, but exceeding their expectations.”
The award will be presented at the “Best of the Best” ceremony on Thursday, Sept. 17, in Las Vegas.
