Oceanside CA— Loose Translations is a multi-disciplinary public art experiment which will culminate in an exhibition at the Oceanside Main Library during Art Walk November 6. Set in motion with the opening lines of The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henriquez,* 74 artists from three MiraCosta classes and three Oceanside writers groups** sent words and images back and forth over the course of two months in a sort of elaborate game of Telephone in which an original message evolves and changes through each hand it passes through.
The chain reaction expands exponentially up to 24 art pieces, and eventually collapses back into a single poem and photograph – spanning expository texts, haikus, moody night photos, and performative images. Not one participant will know how their work has been further translated until the big reveal on Opening Night.
The project explores the many meanings underlying words and images, and the surprising journeys we take as we translate the world around us.
Come see the unveiling of the results at November’s free Oceanside Art Walk Friday, Nov 6, 2015, from 6:00-9:00 p.m. The exhibition will be on view at the library from November 6 – December 4.
