Every year the San Diego County Fair, presented by Albertsons|Vons, hosts performance competitions; an opportunity for local and regional singers, songwriters, musicians, dancers and all-around entertainers to strut their stuff for big prizes.
Are you a great singer? Test your pipes in our singing contest. In the Spotlight is for performers from ages 8 to 17 years, broken down into two divisions (youth for 8 to 12-year-olds, teen for 13 to 17-year-olds), with the live competition and judging taking place on Tuesday, June 21 (youth) and Wednesday, June 22 (teen). To participate, performers must complete an online contest application and submit a video or audio clip. This year’s application deadline is Friday, April 22, 2016, and finalists will be announced online by May 16.
Best Dance Crew is a hip hop-style dance competition for professional and amateur dance groups with a minimum of five and up to 50 performers. Technical skills, showmanship, creativity, rhythm and choreography will be judged. The live competition and judging for Best Dance Crew will take place on Sunday, June 12, in the Del Mar Arena. Three contest divisions (determined by the performer’s age as of June 1, 2016) are: Youth, 5 to 12 years old; Teen, 13 to 17 years old; Adult, 18+. Strut your stuff and win money, trophies and bragging rights. Each division will have the chance to win $1,000 for First Place; $700 for Second Place; and $300 for Third Place. To participate, performers must complete an online contest application. This year’s application deadline is Friday, May 13, 2016, and finalists will be announced online by May 16.
If you are in a band and want to showcase your collective musical talents with fairgoers, and have a chance at the $5,000 First Place prize, apply for the Battle of the Bands! Second Place winners will receive $2,000, and the Third Place band will receive $1,000. A band must have at least three or more musicians, and band members must be age 18 years and older. Live rounds are scheduled for Friday, June 26, on the Coors Light Rock On Stage. To participate, performers must complete an online contest application and submit a video or audio clip. This year’s application deadline is Friday, April 22, 2016, and finalists will be announced online by May 16.
San Diego is loaded with talented singer-songwriters, and the Fair provides a great opportunity for that talent to shine. Returning for its sixth year, the Singer-Songwriter contest searches for the best performance by a solo singer, and provides a showcase for their original songwriting capabilities. Must be 18 years and older. The grand prize is $3,000 and bragging rights; $2,000 for Second Place; and $1,000 for Third Place. The live competition is set for Sunday, June 19. To participate, performers must complete an online contest application. This year’s application deadline is Friday, April 22, 2016, and finalists will be announced online by May 16.
Online applications for the Oratorical Competition are for San Diego County students, from elementary school through grade 12. This competition challenges students to perform an oration (not a song) as individuals or in small groups of up to three members. Regional recognition, ribbons and cash prizes are awarded to the top finishers in three divisions: Elementary (K-5th Grade), Junior High/Middle School (6th– 8th Grade), and High School (9th– 12th Grade). New this year: 4-H youth may enter a presentation (an oration or demonstration) as an individual or group. This year’s application deadline is Friday, May 6, 2016.
In 2015, the five performance competitions garnered nearly 300 applicants from talented San Diego County youth. Close to 100 of the best-of-the-best performed live at last year’s Fair, vying for their share of over $20,000 in cash prizes. This year there will be even more prize money at stake!
