Oceanside CA— Children and youth of ages 6 to 17 have an opportunity to enroll in Oceanside Theatre Company Youth Academy’s (OTCYA) four-week musical production summer camp, which includes fun and training in acting, singing, dance, improvisation, theatre, games, lighting, sound, stage craft, and even marching in the 22nd annual Oceanside Independence Parade. Participants then will become a part of a musical written by Tony Award winners Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty, Seussical Jr., an exciting full-length stage production with costumes and sets. Camp dates are June 6 to July 3, 2016, Mondays to Fridays, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm. Performance dates are July 1 and 2 with evening performances at 7:00 pm, and July 3 with a matinee show at 2:00 pm. Production is directed by Dhyana Dahl, with Music Director and Choreographer Shaun Hagan, and Academy Director Deborah Dodaro.
The Youth Academy’s Director, Deborah Dodaro, has created a program that offers children comprehensive training in theatre. Dodaro shares that her approach to teaching theatre arts is much like programs found in the best high schools and college programs. “Our Summer program is going to include not only a production and performance opportunity for all enrolled, but every student will receive necessary theatre education training. We start with building mastery of theatre knowledge: terms/vocabulary, acting techniques, voice and diction, script interpretation, comedy, movement, musical theatre, auditions, theatre games that help build ensemble and improve performance. Our summer program will also include training in set design and construction, and introduction to lighting and sound. In community theatre, it is not uncommon to see talented actors also running lights, building sets, or moving the sets during a show. Our actors are the company! Student’s who train with us are really getting training in the best, well- rounded theatre-training program in North County.”
Dodaro, a theatre educator for the Carlsbad Unified School District, understands the importance of investing in our children. She promises that the tuition costs for the Summer Camp with Oceanside Theatre Company is an investment well worth the money. “Your child will receive incredible training from professionals in the industry. Every child will have hands on involvement with the building of this production. I love that we are not just about the show, but offering students real training that will be evident in their future involvement in theatre.”
The four-week camp costs $595. Tuition includes morning snack, costumes, and cast party. (Lunch must be provided by students.) Discounts and installment payment plans are available for general public. Siblings and military families receive 10% discounts. The camp will take place at The Brooks Theatre downtown Oceanside and its adjacent Studio 219. The Brooks Theatre is located, 217 North Coast Hwy.
