Oceanside CA— Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) hosted their annual Achievement Awards on May 19th from 6:30-8:00 pm to honor outstanding youth grades K-12. Members of the Year from each Club site and six Youth of the Year nominees were recognized as leaders, volunteers, and role models within the BGCO afterschool programs.
The Members of the Year were individually recognized with a medal and certificate for their outstanding achievement, participation and character demonstrated at the Club. Each Youth of the Year nominee spoke briefly about the impact the Club has had on their lives. For the second year in a row, Miss Julie Hernandez was selected as the 2017 Youth of the Year. This honor is given to the youth who most embodies the Club values of leadership and service; academic excellence; and healthy life styles. The evening allowed the youth stars to shine brightly and their stories were an inspiration to all.
BGCO was privileged to have MiraCosta College President, Dr. Sunita (Sunny) Cooke as a keynote speaker. Dr. Cooke eloquently shared her personal story with the youth and families, encouraging everyone to continue pursuing their goals despite any disadvantages, challenges or obstacles. Dr. Cooke’s story of achievement and success resonated with many of the youth in the audience.
BGCOceanside would like to say thank you to the following elected officials for providing certificates to our youth: Congressman Darrell E. Issa, Mayor Jim Wood, Assembly Member Rocky Chavez, Senator Pat Bates and Supervisor Bill Horn. The Achievement Awards were a huge success because of community sponsors: Waste Management of North County, Ashley’s Party Rental, Mission Linen Supply, Buffalo Wild Wings, That Boy Good, Ohana Cupcakes, Pizza Port Carlsbad, FoodServ staffing, Mimi’s Café, Noodles & Company, Joe’s Crab Shack, Chili’s Grill & Bar, Killer Pizza from Mars Oceanside, El Pollo Loco, Fratelli’s and Z Market.
