Carlsbad CA— Carlsbad High School’s Varsity dance team, the Lancer Dancers, will be offering scholarships to qualified families to attend their Junior Lancer Dancer kids classes. Scholarships will be awarded to up to five families for the 10-week dance class session. Classes are held after school and begin Wednesday, Sept. 28 and run through Nov. 30.
Participating “Junior Lancer Dancers” will learn new dance routines and perform on stage at the Lancer Dancer Showcase in December, as well as at the annual Holiday Tree Lighting Event in downtown Carlsbad. Spending time with these teenage role models will help Junior Lancer Dancers gain self-confidence, improve technique and learn how to develop a winning attitude. Classes are tailored for beginners, intermediate and advanced dancers ages 5 to 14.
Scholarships will be awarded based on HUD guidelines for low income families in San Diego County. Families that do not qualify can attend the class session for a donation of $125.
“We believe all children should be able to take dance classes, no matter what their income level is,” says Rachel Whitehead, the team’s Scholarship Coordinator. “We want to share our passion for dance with community youth that may not have the same opportunities that we have.”
Coached by Lancer Dancer alum Laura Nares, the Lancer Dancers are selected each year through a rigorous try-out and screening process and are nationally recognized for excellence in dance. In the last 15 years, the Lancer Dancers have won 11 National Titles in jazz and hip hop. Their most recent title was at the USA Dance National Championships in Anaheim in March 2016, where they placed first in Hip Hop. In February 2016, the team was awarded the prestigious World Championship title in Hip Hop during the UDA National Dance Team Championships in Orlando, Florida.
Funds raised from non-scholarship participants will go towards helping the team return to Florida in February 2017 to compete for their 12th title.
