Oceanside CA— On Saturday, October 15th the Oceanside High School Foundation will host the 11th Annual Hall of Fame Ceremony in Wally Molifua Gym on campus at 10 a.m. celebrating six outstanding Pirate alums for their services to the community. Meet the new Inductees for 2016 Oceanside High School Hall of Fame

Academics– Richard Selby–Class of 1963

Richard Selby became a top javelin thrower after graduating from Oceanside High. UCLA followed with a full athletic scholarship for track. He became an “All-American” and a member of the most successful track team in NCAA history. School psychology was his calling and he worked 16 years at Garfield High School, home of the movie “Stand and Deliver.” Richard developed a group-counseling program and wrote a handbook on group counseling. Twice he was selected as “School Psychologist of the Year” by his peers. Later on, he started playing beach volleyball and twice won the California State Cup Master’s Division and the Santa Barbara Tournament, considered to be the National Master’s Beach Championship.

Arts– Mark Phelps–Class of 1971

Mr. Phelps retired from Oceanside High School after teaching 33 years of his 35-year career of instructing instrumental music to high school students. He taught thousands of students a wide range of instruments from strings in the orchestra to winds and percussion in marching band and drum line, teaching the fundamentals of reading music, counting time, tuning instruments, performing as an ensemble along with lessons that can be carried into all aspects of life. Recently the Oceanside Cultural Arts Foundation honored him for his outstanding performance and lasting contribution in promoting music and the arts in North San Diego County. In the spring of 2015, the Oceanside Unified School District honored him by renaming the OHS band room as the “Mark Phelps Music Room”. Mark and his family reside in Oceanside as he continues to make music a part of the culture of San Diego County.

Athletics– Thad Bosley–Class of 1974

After graduation, the California Angels drafted Thaddis, as a high school All-American, in the fourth round. He moved quickly through Minor League. On June 29, 1977, the California Angels called Thad up to the majors at twenty years old. Thad played Major League Baseball for 14 seasons, twice leading the majors in pinch hits in 1985 and 1987. He ended his professional coaching career with the Texas Rangers in 2011.
Thad currently owns B & E Records where he wrote and produced contemporary Christian music and R & B ballads. He also provided venture capital for the start-up of Bellmark Records and the development of new artists. Thad holds executive certificates in global finance and negotiations from Thunderbird School of Global Management, and a certificate in financial modeling from the Investment Banking Institute.

Business– David Roche–Class of 1971

David is currently the Executive Director for the Coffee Quality Institute managing their programs worldwide. He has a Master’s Degree in Horticulture (Viticulture) from the University of California at Davis and a Bachelor’s Degree in Horticulture from California Polytechnic University.
Fluent in Spanish and early in his career, he resided in Mexico and managed the world’s largest organic herb and spice producer. Throughout the 1990’s he was Vice President of Diversified Agriculture for Pioneer Mills in Maui, Hawaii, where he developed a 500-acre coffee plantation well known for its unique selection of coffee varieties.
In his widely successful career, he had provided technical assistance to producers of tobacco, soybean, corn, exotic fruits and numerous other crops throughout the United States, Mexico, Central and South America.

Community Service– Doug Fowler–Class of 1970

Doug Fowler grew up in Oceanside and graduated from OHS in 1970. After graduating from the School of Business at San Diego State University in 1975 he began his 35-year banking career, which included 14 years in San Diego County and 21 years in the High Desert Region of California.
Doug has been an active member of the Rotary Club of Apple Valley since 1995, where he served as President in 2000-2001 and was named Rotarian of the Year in 2000 and 2004. He spearheaded Apple Valley’s Rotary co-sponsorship in matching grants to Puruandiro, Mexico resulting in 4 fire trucks and a “jaws of life” for that city, as well as Rotary’s matching grants to buy portable x-ray machines for the Children’s Hospital in Ankara, Turkey. Through Rotary International, Doug went to rural India to help immunize children and infants against the polio virus and Guatemala to help surgeons doing cleft lip/palate surgeries. Doug has now moved back to Oceanside with his wife Deborah of 31 years.

Public Service– Debra Oliver Taylor–Class of 1975

After graduation in 1975, Colonel Debra (Oliver) Taylor attended MiraCosta College and California State Long Beach, graduating with a Bachelor’s degree with Honors in Criminal Justice. She then received two Masters Degrees in Business Management and National Security Strategy. While pursuing her first Masters Degree she cross-enrolled in UCLA’s ROTC cadet program and attended the U.S. Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia and in 1980 received her paratrooper wings. That same year, she was recognized as a “Distinguished Military Graduate” and commissioned into the Regular U.S. Army as a Military Intelligence Officer. Colonel Taylor served 26 years as an Intelligence Officer in various assignments in the United States and abroad.
