Oceanside CA— The unique and ground-breaking Real Options for Adults with Disabilities (R.O.A.D.’s) program celebrated its five year anniversary on June 8, 2017.
Through its enriching and engaging programs, R.O.A.D.’s provides opportunities for adults with intellectual or developmental disabilities. Since its launching in 2012, R.O.A.D.’s has impacted more than 60 members with the help of a strong partnership with the San Diego Regional Center and grant support from Legacy Endowment Community Foundation.
“I am eternally thankful for our members, parents, community, partners, and especially our R.O.A.D.’s team,” said Jodi Diamond, Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside’s CEO, as she kick started the celebration. “R.O.A.D.’s has provided so many wonderful opportunities for our members. We have seen immeasurable growth in all of our members; whether it is improved physical activity which has led to a healthier lifestyle or improved self-confidence through plays and performing. We are thrilled to be celebrating five years of impact in our community.”
The anniversary celebration included a delicious potluck buffet complete with chocolate cake and live music performed by singer-songwriter Lee Coulter, who serenaded the party with whimsical guitar riffs and amazing vocals. The celebration ended with a conga line, a room full of smiles and a dance party that included members, parents and staff.
Jan Pichel, Program Officer for Legacy Endowment Community Foundation, joined the festivities held at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside’s main Clubhouse. Grant funding from Legacy has provided R.O.A.D.’s much needed equipment and supplies.
Through the program, members develop self-advocacy and decision-making readiness while participating in educational, social and life skill activities. R.O.A.D.’s provides members fun fitness classes like Zumba, a variety of field trips such as blueberry-picking excursions, volunteer work at the local Senior Center, acting and drama skills, and education on topics such as money management and positive work ethics.
The program runs Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. For more information on R.O.A.D.’s, please visit http://bgcoceanside.org/programs/real-options-for-adults-with-disabilities/
