Oceanside CA— The San Diego Hunger Coalition, City of Oceanside and Oceanside Unified School District invite you to a community barbecue Thursday, June 29, 2017, 11:00 am to 1:00pm at Libby Lake Park. This is the second event kicking-off the free summer meals for children program put on by the San Diego Hunger Coalition, City of Oceanside and Oceanside Unified School District. The first barbecue was held at Balderrama Park Thursday, June 22, 2017 where a larger number families, than the anticipated turnout of 200 people, attended the event.
The free summer meals program is funded by a $20,000 award from the National League of Cities, Cities Combating Hunger through After school and Summer Meal Programs (CHAMPS) initiative. Mission Federal Credit Union provided a donation of $1,200 allowing the adults to eat at the kick-off community events.
The partnership has resulted in a new summer meal site at the Oceanside Public Library’s Downtown Civic Center branch. “It is our communities responsibility to provide children with good meals so they have good opportunities for future success,” said Deputy Mayor Chuck Lowery at last weeks event. “It starts with three meals a day and with access to free nutritious meals, we are insuring that the kids receive the support they need to grow and develop as our regions future leaders.”

Oceanside Deputy Mayor, Chuck Lowery explains how to text ‘FOOD’ (or ‘COMIDA’) to 877-877 or call 2-1-1 to find a nearby site.

The feeding station at the Civic Center Library is open 11:15 -12:00noon, Monday – Friday. “We are excited to welcome children to a site that promotes learning and activity”, said Marie Town Principal Librarian (Youth Services) at the Oceanside Library. “Pairing a free nutritious meal with the opportunity to practice reading keeps student bodies and minds active and healthy.”
There are 17 summer meal sites in Oceanside. Families looking for free summer meals can text ‘FOOD’ (or ‘COMIDA’) to 877-877 or call 2-1-1 to find a nearby site. You can click [here] to download a pdf list of sites.
