The Walmart Foundation awarded grants to the San Diego Food Bank and Mama’s Kitchen

San Diego County CA— San Diego nonprofits received a combined $117,000 in grants from the Walmart Foundation’s State Giving Program to assist with their hunger programs. These organizations include the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank and Mama’s Kitchen. Now, during Hunger Action Month and beyond, these grants will positively impact the local community by enabling each organization to even better serve San Diego County residents through increased meal distribution and more efficient food delivery services.
Walmart awarded the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank a $57,000 grant to buy two new forklifts to help enhance organizational capacity to serve hungry San Diegans and better service the area. The forklifts will be critical in providing food distribution to partner agencies and clients.
“Walmart is an outstanding supporter of the San Diego community,” said James A. Floros, President and CEO of the Jacobs & Cushman San Diego Food Bank. “The Food Bank feeds more than 370,000 people every month in San Diego County – including 32,000 local, low-income military personnel and their dependents. We could not feed so many people without support from community partners like Walmart. Thanks to Walmart’s amazing gift of $57,000, the Food Bank will purchase two new forklifts that will be used to help distribute fresh, healthy, nutritious food to individuals and families in need in communities throughout San Diego County. With this gift, Walmart is helping our Food Bank become a ‘Nutrition Bank’ and enabling us to provide the healthy food that the families we serve need to grow and thrive.”
Mama’s Kitchen received a $60,000 grant to feed San Diego County residents improved home meal delivery services focused on improving the lives of women, men, and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer, or other critical illnesses.
“The Walmart Foundation understands that these organizations are essential to building stronger communities. They share our values and are committed to helping San Diego veterans, seniors and families in need live better,” said Angela Wilson, Walmart regional general manager. “Through these donations, we hope more people will have access to organizations that are able to provide them with the services they need.”
The Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better, awarding grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S.
To be considered for support, applicants must have a current 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status. Additional information about the program’s funding guidelines and application process are available online at www.walmartfoundation.org.
In FY2017, Walmart and the Walmart Foundation invested more than $100 million in local communities, including more than $61 million in cash and in-kind contributions to non-profits throughout California. $340,000 was awarded to local non-profits from the Walmart State Giving Program.
As the nation’s largest grocer, Walmart is uniquely positioned to support organizations that are on the front lines in the fight against hunger. In addition to donating more than 31 million pounds of food to California food banks – equivalent to more than 25 million meals – Walmart and the Walmart Foundation donated more than $50 million toward hunger relief in FY2017, including more than $600,000 for after school and breakfast in the classroom programs in California.
Walmart also engages customers across the country in making an impact on hunger in their local communities. In the U.S., Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations teamed up with customers and participating suppliers to support Feeding America through the “Fight Hunger. Spark Change.” campaign, raising more than $17 million in funds in FY2017 including funds for Feeding America San Diego.
Walmart associates are deeply engaged in their communities and in FY2017, associates overall volunteered more than 1.2 million hours generating more than $12 million in Walmart donations, including nearly 52,000 hours with local non-profits and charitable causes throughout California, marking another way in which the company supports and impacts the local communities it serves.
