Mission and the Community unite to keep Dia in Oceanside

Oceanside CA— Community organizers came together to keep the historical Dia de los Muertos Festival in Oceanside.
This year’s event, scheduled for Sunday, October 29, was spearheaded by Cathy Nykiel, Dave Mears of Legendary Event Management, and Chema and Manuel Navarro of Por Siempre Car Club. The group is working closely with the Mission’s CEO, Kathleen Flanagan, to ensure a successful celebration at Oceanside’s jewel, the King of the Missions.
“We’re so happy to be able to keep the Dia De Los Muertos celebration in Oceanside,” said Flanagan. “It really shows the strength of the community to come together and throw such a vibrant celebration.”
Dia de los Muertos is a Mexican tradition dating back 3,000 years that honors the memories of the deceased. This year, the event will be more vibrant and exciting than before. Over 15 altars will be on display, as well as, local traditional dancers and entertainment, a Classic Car Show and shopping Mercado. Attendees are encouraged to participate in the free interactive chalk cemetery, where they can dedicate images, flowers and candles to their loved ones.
Vendors from all over California will outfit the event traditional food such as tamales, tortas, tacos, corn/elote, raspados, burritos, mole, Pan de Muerto, and so much more; including desserts to sweeten your palette.
The event is free to the public and will run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Individuals who wish to build an altar or participate in the car show at the event can download an application online. For more information, visit: http://www.mslrdiadelosmuertos.com.
