The Carson Scholars Fund is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 by retired, world-renowned pediatric neurosurgeon and New York Times bestselling authors Dr. Ben Carson and his wife, Candy. The Carson Scholars Fund operates under an education mission. One of its initiatives is the Reading Room Project. The Reading Room Project provides funding for schools to purchase high-interest books and create a literacy-enriched environment to promote daily, independent reading. To date, the CSF has established 177 reading room locations in 22 states and Washington, DC. The Reading Room Project is new to California thanks to a generous donation by a couple in San Diego.
In addition to hosting special guest readers, reading room school partners throughout the county will be sharing the book Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear by Lindsay Mattick. This New York Times bestseller and 2016 Caldecott Medal Winner tells the remarkable true story of the bear that inspired Winnie-the-Pooh. This year’s event was made possible through partnerships with the William and Winifred Freeman Foundation and Dreamscape Media. Thanks to the sponsorship of the William and Winifred Freeman Foundation, every CSF reading room school partner received a hardcover book of Finding Winnie: The True Story of the World’s Most Famous Bear, an animated DVD narration of the story and children storybook activities. “Dreamscape is proud to partner with the Carson Scholars Fund to share Finding Winnie with schools across the country,” said Tammy Faxel, Publisher of Dreamscape Media. “We are dedicated to bringing books to life, including the remarkable true story that inspired Winnie-the-Pooh.” For children not attending a reading room school, the special book narration and storybook activities are available on the CSF website: www.carsonscholars.org.
