Encinitas CA— For many of us, the start of a new year gives us pause to reflect and resolve to go forward implementing positive changes into our lives. What better way to begin 2018 then joining the enthusiastic and dedicated ranks of trained docents at the San Diego Botanic Garden? You will be given a new appreciation of San Diego’s unique floristic environment and learn how share this knowledge with others in our community.
At our 8 week Docent Training Program, you’ll gain in-depth knowledge about the unique collection of plants at this 37-acre botanic wonderland. Meet others who share your interest in the natural world, while learning from experts in a variety of specialties.
Docent activities include planning and working on special events, volunteering in garden beautification, and helping the Garden run smoothly. Docents are also encouraged (but not required) to lead garden tours. To each of these activities docents bring valuable leadership made possible through this specialized training.
Classes take place at San Diego Botanic Garden from 9:30 am – 1 pm on the following dates:

  • January 18 SDBG Introduction to Docent Program & Garden Overview plus Docent Website and Hours Recording
  • February 1 Larabee Legacy & Botany Bootcamp
  • February 15 Palms and Cycads & Childrens Programs & Gardens
  • March 1 Mediterranean Climate Gardens
  • March 15 Bamboo & Subtropical Fruit Gardens
  • March 29 Succulents & the Desert Gardens
  • April 12 CA Native Plants &Native Plants/Native People & Firescape Gardens
  • April 26 Trees of the SDB Garden & the Herb Garden

Cost: $60 fee for 8 classes. Pre-requisites prior to enrollment in Docent Training are required including: attendance at a Volunteer Orientation Meeting; completing 10 hours of volunteer work at SD Botanic Garden; and submitting SDBG Volunteer Forms and an SDBG Volunteer Background Check.
