Think Local: All funds raised at the event are directed back to breast health resources within the San Diego community and research

San Diego CASusan G. Komen® San Diego’s (Komen San Diego) 23rd annual Race for the Cure® will be held on Sunday, Nov. 3, 2019 in Balboa Park. The vendor expo will be open at 6:30 a.m. along Balboa Drive, and the walk will begin at 8 a.m. With the money raised from the event, Susan G. Komen San Diego provides free services for every step of the breast cancer journey, including research, mammograms, biopsies, ultrasounds, care coordination, advocacy and financial assistance for breast cancer patients’ most critical needs during treatment.
“Watching thousands of San Diegans pour into Balboa Park united by the same vision: a world without breast cancer, takes my breath away,” said Shaina Gross, president and CEO of Komen San Diego. “We are stronger together as a community and that morning we are all filled with an unwavering hope for the future.”
Komen set a “Bold Goal” to reduce the current number of breast cancer deaths in the U.S. by 50 percent by 2026. Critical funds raised throughout the year through events like Race for the Cure all support reaching this goal. Komen San Diego is the only organization that first studies the community to identify the gaps in breast cancer care and the barriers to health access unique to the San Diego County, and then works to eliminate the barriers.
In 2018-2019, Komen San Diego raised $261,000 for research, provided $151,300 in financial assistance, educated 4,603 San Diegans, and saw 608 people receive treatment as a result of Komen San Diego’s advocacy efforts to change State legislation.
“Join us on November 3rd for an event unlike any other in San Diego,” said Gross. “The future holds a brighter road, an ever-growing circle of survivors. Breast cancer will not defeat us.”
