ResMed Chief Medical Office has had a life-long passion for science

San Diego CA— The Elementary Institute of Science (EIS) has announced that Carlos M. Nunez, MD, Chief Medical Officer of local medical equipment company ResMed, has joined its Board of Directors.
The San Diego nonprofit, located in the City’s Emerald Hills neighborhood, has been providing innovative hands-on science programs for local students since the 1960s. Recent evaluation of EIS programs demonstrated that its students significantly out-perform their counterparts around the country on several measures, including “STEM identity” and critical thinking skills.
Dr. Nunez said, “EIS has been inspiring kids to pursue science for over five decades. As a child, my interests in science and nature inspired me to pursue a career in medicine, but I wish there was an organization around like EIS where I grew up. I am honored and excited to be part of this effort to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.”
The Institute covers a broad range of topics, including computer science, life science, robotics, engineering, chemistry, and photography.
EIS Board President Patsy Tomlin said, “We are so pleased that Dr. Nunez has joined our Board. He has a wealth of experience in both science and business that will be invaluable to help us carry out our mission to provide underserved students with access to first-rate STEM programs.”
Over the past four years, a strategic plan the Board implemented has more than quadrupled the number of program participants at EIS and increased the number of participants from low-income households by more than 500%.
A significant challenge for today’s STEM sector is the need for killed workers as 10.5 million new STEM jobs are projected to be added to the workforce over the next 10 years. Unfortunately, a US Department of Education study found that less than 1/3 of high school freshmen are interested in studying or pursuing STEM as a career. EIS addresses that challenge by providing young students the interest, knowledge, and skills to enter the STEM field.
