San Diego CA— National STEM Day is almost here and thousands of students from San Diego schools will get a head start on activities today, November 7, 2019, when they visit the Fleet Week San Diego Qualcomm Innovation Zone. This year’s displays will include an F-35 flight simulator presented by Lockheed Martin.
“We’re thankful for our partnership with Lockheed Martin and our other Student STEM Day presenters,” said 2019 Fleet Week San Diego Board President Gordon Rutherford. “Together, we are able to show students throughout San Diego the exciting opportunities that are available in the STEM fields. Some of these children are our future innovators, and we hope that this experience inspires them to do great things.”
Studies in the early 21st century showed that the U.S. was falling behind on STEM education relative to other countries. These findings have prompted a number of programs throughout the U.S. to encourage STEM education including the celebration of National STEM Day Nov. 8.
A congressional STEM Education Caucus emphasized the importance of these activities stating, “Our knowledge-based economy is driven by constant innovation. The foundation of innovation lies in a dynamic, motivated and well-educated workforce equipped with STEM skills.”
Students from schools throughout San Diego county will visit the Innovation Zone Nov. 7 and 8 engaging with new and emerging technologies including a field medical center and dive tanks, in addition to the F-35 simulator. Following their visit to the Innovation Zone, students will get an additional in depth look at applied technology on a grander scale during tours aboard the U.S. Navy amphibious ship USS San Diego and the Coast Guard Cutter Robert Ward.
