San Diego County CA— The Resource Conservation District (RCD) of Greater San Diego County, held its eleventh annual plant giveaway, benefiting hundreds of elementary schools in San Diego County. Nearly 1,800 plants were donated to support 180 school gardens in elementary schools throughout the county.
The vegetable and herb seedlings were donated by Altman Plants of Vista. Plumeria cuttings were also distributed thanks to the Southern California Plumeria Society.
With childhood obesity on the rise, more and more schools are making the commitment to create and maintain school gardens — using fun, hands-on gardening techniques to teach students about healthy eating. “A school garden is really the perfect outdoor classroom,” said Ann Baldridge, RCD Program Director. “In addition to learning about nutrition, agriculture, and connecting with nature, a garden allows teachers to develop creative lessons addressing all types of subjects, including science, math, writing reading, art, and music.” Baldridge added.
