Oceanside CA— Boys & Girls Clubs of Oceanside (BGCO) has received a $7,500 grant from San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to support their STREAMing Ahead program during the summer months. During the temporary Club closure due to the COVID-19 pandemic, BGCO continued to provide exciting, virtual STREAM (Science, Technology, Research, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) enrichment to underserved youth each day.
BGCO was able to reopen for summer camp on June 15th, the first time since the beginning of the pandemic! BGCO is offering summer camp to school aged youth Monday-Friday, 7:00am-6:00pm. While at the Club, youth participate in innovative hands-on, project-based-learning and explore the exciting world of STREAM!
The purpose of the SDG&E grant is to prevent the “summer learning slide.” By the end of 5th grade, low-income children are nearly three grades behind their more affluent peers in reading, as a result of summer learning loss. This year, due to the pandemic and subsequent school closures, that loss will be even more exacerbated. Programs like ours play a critical role in combatting this loss. Studies show that if students are able to participate in organized academic activities, they are less likely to experience losses in academic skills and knowledge before the next school year. Funding from the SDG&E grant will go toward educational program supplies and implementing the STREAMing Ahead program for youth.
“We are so incredibly grateful for SDG&E’s continued support, especially during this time of crisis. After being stuck at home for months, our kids are craving the excitement of hands-on learning experiences. This grant will allow us to provide enriching and thought provoking programming for at-risk youth to explore the world of STREAM,” said Jodi Diamond, CEO.
SDG&E’s commitment to environmental education and stewardship, to the safety of local communities, and to inspiring the next generation of leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math is part of SDG&E’s mission to build the cleanest, safest and most reliable energy company in America.
BGCO is implementing Summer Camp in accordance with the social distancing and health recommendations set forth by San Diego County, the State of California, and the CDC. While summer may look a little different this year, BGCO campers and staff alike are overjoyed to be back at the Club.
