Carlsbad CA— Zona Murray, a longtime Oceanside resident now residing in Carlsbad, turned 99 years-old on July 2, 2020 and members of the Soroptimist International of Oceanside -Carlsbad wanted to help her celebrate.
The group got together for a drive by celebration. “What a great surprise,” said Zona from her front porch. “I can’t believe how many cars there are. They go all the way down the street.”
Zona Murray’s late husband was Major General Ray Murray, former Camp Pendleton Commandant, hero of Chosin Reservoir Battle who earned two Navy Cross medals (one during World War II and one during the KoreanWar), a Distinguished Service Cross, four Silver Stars, a Legion of Merit and a Purple Heart. The College Blvd. bridge over the San Luis Rey River is named after the Major General.
Along with celebrating her 99th birthday, Zona was honored for her fifty years of service with the Soroptimist. “They let me join when I was very young,” said Zona.
The mission of Soroptimist International of Oceanside -Carlsbad is to improve the lives of women and girls through programs leading to social and economic empowerment. They reach their goals through teamwork, fundraising, grants and hands-on community service.
