Oceanside CA— One of the community service arms of the Oceanside Senior Anglers Foundation, Anglers 4 Military, recently took 28 Marines from 3D LAAD Battalion from Camp Pendleton on a the three-quarter day boat from Helgren’s Sportfishing in Oceanside Harbor. The captain of the Oceanside 95 found plenty of rock cod reds for the Marines to experience. Every Marine caught and took home fish.
“Our Anglers 4 Military trips are completely cost free to the Marines, including tackle, bait, and meals,” said Ken Harrison, OSA Foundation President. Members of the Senior Anglers served has deck hands, giving advice, helping to hook up, and offering whoops and hollers of support when a fish was landed.

Marine GySgt. Mario Guadarrama explained that his Marine unit, 3D LAAD – Low Altitude Air Defense – trains for combat use of Stinger missiles. The weapon can destroy enemy low flying targets – jets and helicopters with accuracy and precision.
Through the training given at 3D LAAD, a Marine and his unit can unload the shoulder-fired weapon from a Hum-Vee, set up, lock on, and deploy the enemy target within eight seconds.
“Its great to see young Marine men and woman out enjoying themselves for a day on the water fishing,” said OSA Program Director Jim Mauritz. “Its one day they can relax and don’t have to think about the duties of defending our country.”
“The OSA Foundation raises funds to support cost-free fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for kids, scouts, and military,” said Harrison. “Our 501c3 non-profit Foundation raises funds through club raffles, corporate and private donations, and the generosity of our members,” said Harrison.
“We’ve seen a huge decline of interest in outdoor sports over the years. We know that with these trips, we’ve exposed numerous adults and kids to our sport. A few lifelong anglers will be born,” added Harrison.
Once COVID restrictions are lifted, anglers over age 40 are invited to the monthly meetings of Southern California’s largest senior fishing club, held at the Oceanside Senior Center, 455 Country Club Lane, at 9:00 a.m., on the first Tuesday of each month, once COVID restrictions are lifted.
