Collection translates to more than 1,000 lives saved and nearly 1,900 meals made

San Diego CASan Diego County Credit Union® (SDCCU®), San Diego’s largest locally-owned financial institution, supported the SDCCU Holiday Bowl Blood and Food Drive in partnerships with the San Diego Blood Bank and San Diego Food Bank. The event took place at Grossmont Center in La Mesa on Thursday, November 19, before the holidays. A total of 2,254 pounds of food which is equivalent to 1,878 meals, and over 300 pints of blood were collected, which will impact more than 1,000 lives and many families in need this season throughout San Diego County.
“SDCCU is proud to support the inaugural SDCCU Holiday Bowl Blood and Food Drive with the San Diego Blood Bank and San Diego Food Bank,” said Teresa Campbell, SDCCU president and CEO. “We are delighted by the amount of blood donated and food collected from our generous community donors as we know it will help many people this holiday season, especially those experiencing hardship as a result of the pandemic.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the blood supply is critically low and new donations are continuously needed to provide for patients in the region. School closures and work-from-home policies have created a slew of blood drive cancellations, which has contributed to the shortage. This is significant as more than half of the blood supply comes from these mobile drives! To schedule a blood donation, visit the San Diego Blood Bank scheduling website.
In addition to the 350,000 people that the San Diego Food Bank serves each month, they have been instrumental in hunger-relief for those impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. For a complete list of most-needed foods as well as donation centers, visit the Food Bank website.
