Escondido CA— The nonprofit BIPOC Support Foundation has raised funds to donate backpacks filled with school supplies to local students. One hundred ten backpacks were handed out to students at The Preuss School in early June, with one hundred fifty going to students with the Boys and Girls Club in Vista, another two hundred to the Oceanside Unified School, and (high school info?) These backpacks are filled with basic supplies such as notebooks, binders, and writing utensils, but also include other objects such as books, craft materials, water bottles, earbuds, and community-donated gifts.
San Diego is a strong community that often acts as an example of inclusion and support, making it the ideal place to begin this project. The Backpack Initiative is based on studies that show how important it is for students to have a strong support system. BIPOC Support Foundation encourages connecting local community businesses and leaders to the youth who will one day mold our future. Partnering with schools and after-school programs allows for the supplies to reach as many children as possible and to hear feedback from educators and parents.
Community involvement is important for the success of this project. San Diego Credit Union, Maya’s Cookies, SoCal Green Screen, California Coast Credit Union, Moonlight Cultural Foundation, JSCK Foundation, HandsOn San Diego, and Words Alive are sponsors for this event. There are many rewarding options for sponsorships from individuals and businesses. BIPOC Support Foundation asks that anyone with questions or who is interested in being a part of the Backpack Initiative contact BSF through their website: www.bipocsupportfoundation.org.
