San Diego CA— Honoring its namesake’s legacy and passion for philanthropic giving, The Conrad Prebys Foundation is celebrating the selection of 102 grant projects, which have been awarded nearly $13 million in grant funding during its summer 2021 grant cycle.
Together with its inaugural grant cycle earlier this year, the Foundation has awarded more than $90 million in grant funding in 2021 to deserving organizations that will positively impact the San Diego community.
This cycle’s grant recipients include a wide range of San Diego nonprofits such as Promises2Kids, San Diego History Center, San Diego Children’s Choir, Museum of Us, The Salvation Army and the Ocean Discovery Institute, among others.
The awarded summer applicants reflect a balance between focus areas of personal interest to Conrad Prebys – including visual and performing arts, higher education, medical research, health care, youth development and animal conservation – and urgent needs resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.
Notable projects funded by the summer 2021 grant cycle include:
- $102,431 to Palomar College Foundation for a state-of-the-art trauma care simulator for nursing, EMT and paramedic students.
- $500,000 to Family Health Centers of San Diego, Laura Rodriguez Research Institute to help increase equitable representation in research, and equitable benefit from research, for underserved persons in the San Diego region.
- $312,200 to Lamb’s Players Theatre for HVAC and facility upgrades to support a safe and healthy reopening of the theatre for public performances.
- $1,000,000 to Tri-City Hospital Foundation to support the remodel of their emergency department.
- $38,000 to MANA de San Diego for their Hermanitas program and its professional development experiences for Latina youths.
- $50,000 to San Diego Humane Society to support Project Wildlife and their efforts to rescue and rehabilitate local wildlife.

More than $9 million awarded in the Foundation’s summer grant cycle will be dispersed in 2021, with remaining funds administered in future years as part of multiyear grant requests. The grants awarded range in size from a $7,500 one-time grant to a $2 million multiyear grant.
“The summer 2021 grant cycle is a continuation of our namesake’s passion and legacy for philanthropic giving and builds upon our inaugural grant cycle earlier this year,” said Erin Decker, director of grantmaking for The Conrad Prebys Foundation. “The Conrad Prebys Foundation is thrilled to support these 102 nonprofit organizations that are each working diligently to incite meaningful change throughout San Diego.”
The Foundation is already accepting letters of intent for its winter 2022 grant cycle. The deadline to apply is 5 p.m. PST on Friday, Sept. 3, 2021, and recipients will be announced in early 2022.
“During his lifetime, Conrad Prebys experienced so much joy when giving to causes he was passionate about,” said Tony Cortes, a longtime friend of Conrad Prebys and board chair of The Conrad Prebys Foundation. “The Foundation board and staff hope these gifts will inspire others in the community to experience that same joy by giving to the causes and organizations that matter most to them.”
