San Diego County CA— A “service over self” ethic coupled with academic drive earned 12 San Diego high school students a Sunflower Scholarship award from Chelsea’s Light Foundation. The Sunflower Scholarship Class of 2018 represents students attending a wide array of colleges from SDSU to Yale. To date, the Sunflower Scholarship Fund has awarded over $650,000 to 87 deserving students. Approximately 200 students from 57 San Diego County high schools submitted applications, which were personally reviewed by Kelly and Brent King who established Chelsea’s Light Foundation in honor of their daughter Chelsea.
“Just as Chelsea was unique and cared about the world around her, these inspiring students are visionary Changemakers® that value making a difference in their communities,” said Kelly King.
Winning the outstanding “Sparkle” scholarships are Brionna Martinez of El Camino High School (UC Irvine) and Selena Martinez of Scripps Ranch High School (Yale).
Other scholarship winners include:

  • Jack Bennett / Santa Fe Christian / UC Santa Barbara
  • Davis Boring / Mira Mesa High/ SDSU
  • Max Benning / La Jolla Country Day / Northern Arizona
  • Elena Dsouza / Poway High / SDSU
  • Nikita Krishnan / Bishop’s / UC Berkeley
  • Max Leonard / La Jolla High / University of Chicago

The Sunflower Scholarship Fund was established to reflect the attributes which Chelsea King embodied as a young citizen and student at Poway High School. She was extremely diligent, involved in a variety of school activities, had a passion for volunteering in her community, believed in the power of change and dreamed of making the world a better place.
The Chelsea’s Light Sunflower Scholarship Fund is powered by the success of the annual “Finish Chelsea’s Run” 5K as well as financial sponsorship from Bridgepoint Education, Clark Companies, and Wells Fargo Bank.
Based in San Diego County, Chelsea’s Light Foundation was created in 2010 by Kelly and Brent in honor of their daughter Chelsea King. The mission of the organization is to unite and lead people who are passionate about protecting children and inspiring positive change in their communities. Chelsea’s Light Foundation is also committed to expanding Chelsea’s Law to all states, and to awarding college scholarships to service-minded high school students throughout San Diego County.
